Love books? Have strong opinions? Excited to share your thoughts?

Hyphen’s books editors, Cathlin and Abigail, are looking for writers to review newly released books of all genres for the Hyphen blog. Reviews are 600-900 words. They must be thoughtful and well-written, and can be either personal or academic in style. We do not limit coverage to works by Asian American authors. We also encourage reviews of any book from an Asian American perspective, or of books which merit strong interest from the Asian American community. We provide a monthly list of available review copies from which reviewers can select.

Book reviewers will also have the chance to pitch articles and author interviews for both the blog and print issues.

Examples of past reviews include:

Julie Otsuka’s The Buddha in the Attic by Manan Desai (fiction)

GB Tran’s Vietnamerica by Nawaaz Ahmed (graphic novel)

Mendoza (nonfiction)

Cathlin’s essays and stories have appeared in Hyphen, I Saw My Ex at a Party (Kearny Street Press), Teacher Revised, and ASCD Express. She has performed her work at Kearny Street Workshop’s Apature Festival and San Francisco’s Litquake. A former high school English teacher, she is currently a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Abigail’s poetry and book reviews have appeared in Calyx, The Critical Flame, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. She received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and her master’s degree in literature from Oxford University.

If interested, please email Cathlin (cathlin.goulding[at]hyphenmagazine[dot]com) and Abigail (abigail.licad[at]hyphenmagazine[dot]com), and provide two writing samples. If you’ve got ideas for possible articles and author interviews, feel free to share.

Thanks for your interest and we look forward to hearing from you!

Deadline: 15 March 2012

Editors Dean Francis Alfar (publisher of the Philippine Speculative Fiction anthologies) and Kenneth Yu (publisher of Philippine Genre Stories) announce an open call for short fiction submissions for HORROR: Fantastic Filipino Fiction for Young Adults.

Submissions must be:

1. in the horror genre or contain strong horror elements

2. written with the Young Adult reader in mind (from 10 – 18 years old) and feature a young adult character (or characters)

3. cognizant of the themes and concerns of Young Adult fiction (coming of age, identity, belonging, a sense of wonder, a love for adventure, angst, concerns over school, challenges of youth, family issues, relationships to authority figures, sexuality, experimentation, peer pressure, bullying, among many others) – without being didactic and/or boring.

4. written in English

5. authored by Filipinos or those of Philippine ancestry

Submissions are preferred to be:

1. original and unpublished

2. no shorter than 1,000 words and no longer than 7,500

In the case of previously-published work—if accepted, the author will be expected to secure permission to reprint, if necessary, from the original publishing entity, and to provide relevant publication information.

Submission details:

1. No multiple or simultaneous submissions—i.e., submit only one story, and do not submit that story to any other market until you have received a letter of regret from us.

2. All submissions should be in Rich Text Format (saved under the file extension ‘.rtf’), and emailed to dean(at)kestrelddm(dot)com with the subject line ‘FFFH: title (word count)’, where ‘title’ is the title of your submission and ‘(word count)’ is the number of words the submission comes up to, rounded up to the nearest hundred (use the “tools” function of your word processor to find out.

3. Do not use fancy formatting.

4. Include a brief bio and publishing history (if applicable).

5. The deadline for submissions is midnight, Manila time, March 15, 2012. Letters of acceptance or regret will be sent out no later than one month after the deadline.

6. First-time authors are more than welcome to submit; good stories trump literary credentials any time.

Compensation will be Php500 for selected stories. We are still deciding whether to go digital or print (or even both). In the event that we publish a print version, each author will be provided with a contributor’s copy of the book. If the anthology is published in digital form, each author will be given a formatted e-copy of the anthology.

Deadline: 1 May 2012

Call for Submissions: Outlaw Bodies. a themed anthology from The Future Fire

The “Outlaw Bodies” issue of The Future Fire will gather together stories about the future of human bodies that break boundaries—legal, societal, biological, more.

In the future, what sorts of bodies will be expected and which will violate our expectations—of gender, of ability, of appearance, of functionality? What technological interventions with the “natural” body will be available, expected, discouraged, restricted, forbidden? How will societies ensure conformance to their expectations—through law, through which incentives and disincentives? How will individuals who do not conform to embodied expectations (by choice or otherwise) make their way in these future worlds?

The anthology seeks stories that interrogate these questions from feminist, disability rights, queer, postcolonial and other social-political perspectives, especially intersectional ones, for a special issue on the theme of “Outlaw Bodies,” to be guest co-edited by Lori Selke.

Word count is flexible, but we are unlikely to accept any story over 10,000 words. Send your stories as an attachment to: outlawbodies.tff@gmail.com. We prefer .doc, .docx, .rtf or .odt files—query first for any other format.

Deadline: May 1, 2012.
Payment: $35/story.

About the publisher: The Future Fire is an e-published magazine showcasing new writing in Social-Political Speculative Fiction. See our manifesto at http://futurefire.net/about/manifesto.html for more details.

About the editor: Lori Selke has been published in Strange Horizons and Asimov’s. She’s been active in queer, sex radical and feminist activist circles for over two decades. She is also the former editor/publisher of the tiny lit zine Problem Child.

How can we better understand and imagine new possibilities for men and feminism? Are you a guy who hates sexism? Do you call yourself a feminist? Have you spent hours over coffee (or beer or on blogs) debating issues of gender, power, race, class, and sexuality? Are you involved with social justice activism? Have you grappled with accountability, imperfection, and social change? If so, then you have stories to tell and I’d like to hear what you have to say. For complete information see http://bit.ly/zzwLmE

“I am collecting essays for a revised second edition of “Men Speak out: Views on Gender, Sex, and Power.” I’m interested in first-person accounts of growing up male and identifying with — or questioning the ideals of feminism. Stories about pivotal moments in personal or poltiical chagne are especially welcome. You don’t have to call yourself a feminist to have a relevant story. There are so many directions your essay can take, but I am NOT looking for an academic essay. No citations, not footnotes. I AM looking fo thought-provoking stories written in your own language you actually use when you talk with your friends.”

Please send submissions or queries to Shira Tarrant at Shira_Tarrant@yahoo.com. Include Men Speak Out 2e Submission in the subject line. Submission queries should be directed to the above.
