Songs For the Beloved is an offering of oral traditional songs from the Philippines by award-winning Philippine artist Grace Nono; songs that invoke the Beloved in spirit, in water, in flame, in tree, in voice and instrument, in machine. It proceeds as incantation, ululation, chorus, murmur, echo, silence—resounding, reverberating, inviting into presence the absence that is awakened, placated, implored, praised. The sacred is thus explored as the relationship between the Self and Beloved, a relationship that is kept alive through song. Featuring oral traditional songs with sacred themes learned from oralists, ritualists, and healers across the Philippine archipelago, Songs for The Beloved features Grace Nono along with fellow musicians Charles Wandag and Bo Razon.
Presented by Greenwich House Music School. This program is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of Ms. Josie Natori.
